Trudeau Invested $100 Million Into Canadian Vegan Meat
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau makes a big step for a plant based future and announced that the multi-million dollar funding would go to Merit Functional Foods to expand the vegan meat industry in Canada. The Winnipeg-based company specializes in producing plant-based proteins.
With the new funding, Functional Foods will build a new commercial-scale protein production plant, capable of utilizing 10,000 metric tonnes of yellow peas. Why yellow peas? This is an important ingredient used to make plant-based meat like the Beyond Burger, which was the burger that was popularized by the large fast food chain, A&W Canada. This new factory will also produce an estimated 17,000 tonnes of canola seed.
“As people around the world start eating more plant-based products, we have an opportunity to bring together Canadian innovation and Canadian crops, and a chance to create good, well-paying jobs,” Trudeau said. “This facility will be a world leader in plant-based proteins and create good jobs in a fast-growing field,”
